It is with pleasure I introduce you to Sonia Diestel-Feddersen and her exciting career journey so far.
Sonia Diestel-Feddersen, Senior Recruitment Consultant, Marketing & Communications
Brief description of your role:
My role encompasses establishing relationships with professionals in Marketing and Communications whether it is with candidates who are seeking work, or clients who are looking to engage candidates in their Marketing & Communications teams. I develop relationships to ensure they are long term with both parties, which has assisted me to be an expert in my field. I also manage the Sales & Marketing team in the Adelaide office.
So… what do you actually do?
5/6am Either go to the gym or get up and get ready for a big day 8/9/10am Straight into the office to hit the phones, answer emails and usually interview candidates in the morning and first thing 10-12pm I am usually speaking to clients and arranging visits and meetings, updates about roles etc 1200 Try to eat something on the go! 1-4 pm Speaking with more clients and candidates 4.30pm I leave office and log back in around 7pm to respond to queries that have come through in the meantime.
How did you get to your position of being?
I was actually recommended to join Hays from a Consultant and now colleague who placed me in my very first role at Network TEN. The Consultant is still working at Hays all these years later, and felt I would suit the role and the culture at Hays. She was certainly right here!
Have you always wanted to work in the Recruitment / Human Recourses area?
I will be very honest and say I never thought about it previously. I spent years in Media/Advertising land in Adelaide, and had never considered Recruitment. When I met with Hays, I loved the management, the culture and the role and they enticed me to join the team!
What do you love about your role?
Changing the lives of candidates and placing them in their dream roles. There is nothing better than making a phone call with a letter of offer for a candidate and hearing their reaction. It is a very rewarding, yet challenging role.
Over your career, what has been your ‘love this’ moment?
Working at Hays and enjoying what I do daily. I have been fortunate enough to work at Network TEN, Showpony Advertising and Mediacom and had some great experience and worked with some wonderful people, however I feel that I have truly found my niche in Recruitment at Hays.
What would be the least favourite aspect of your role?
Administration! No matter what level you operate at, Administration will always follow you 🙂
Any advice for anyone aspiring to work in the Recruitment / Human Recourses industry?
You must be a people person, be adaptable to an ever changing environment, and be able to work quickly and calming under pressure. It is a huge role, and there is always a lot to do with not enough hours in the day. I often have a ‘new idea’ of how I can do something more efficiently, or change the way I do something. I get quite frustrated with myself as I have ‘change the world’ ideas and need to accept at times I am only one person and can only do what I can do!
